The Vicksburg YMCA is hosting a Blood Drive on Monday, May 3.
Giving blood is considered the most precious life-saving gift. As many as 4.5 million people across the nation will need a blood transfusion, according to the Moffit Cancer Center. Those suffering from cancer rely on blood transfusions, and in cancer centers like Moffit, transfusions are needed daily.
According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds in the U.S., someone is getting a transfusion, with around 36,000 units needed daily. Type O negative is in high demand, as only 7% of the U.S. population carries the blood type, and is regarded as the “universal” blood type, according to Mayo Clinic.
The YMCA Blood Drive is aimed at helping provide healthcare facilities by hosting a blood drive of their own. The drive will be from noon – 6 p.m. Monday by Mississippi Blood Services.
Giving the gift of life is its own reward, however the deal is sweetened for those who donate at the drive. Philanthropists will receive a $10 pre-loaded visa card as well as a free T-shirt.
