VJHS player Michael Johnson scored three touchdowns Thursday

Vicksburg Junior High School quarterback Michael Johnson scored three touchdowns in the final junior high football game of the season Thursday.

Johnson, a seventh grader, threw two of the touchdowns and rushed for the third in the 56-14 victory over Germantown. Both of Johnson’s touchdown passes were thrown to Delvechio Ellis.

This season was Johnson’s first year playing quarterback, and he helped the Gators finish with a successful 3-2 record under head coach Larry Carter Jr. He will have another season to play as quarterback as an eighth grader during the next school year.

Johnson also plays basketball and baseball in addition to football, and he has excelled in all three sports.

Details revealed of JSU football coach Deion Sanders’ contract

Deion Sanders contract with Jackson State University to coach football is worth $300,000 a year.

Sanders officially became the university’s head coach last month. According to The Clarion Ledger, his contract extends through 2024.

He is also eligible to receive bonuses under the contract:

  • $25,000 for every win over an FBS opponent
  • $10,000 for winning the SWAC Eastern Division
  • $30,000 for winning the SWAC championship
  • $50,000 for winning the Celebration Bowl
  • $5,000 for a team APR greater than 970.

Sanders is currently the offensive coordinator for Trinity Christian High School in Texas, which will end its season in late November. JSU’s football season is scheduled to begin Feb. 21, 2021 against Edward Waters College after the SWAC postponed fall games due to COVID-19 concerns.

St. Al Flashes defeat Washington School 43-28

The St. Aloysius Flashes traveled to Greenville Friday night to play Washington School, and they came up with a big 43-28 district win.

Running back Brennan Williams led the Flashes with 132 rushing yards on 13 carries and two rushing touchdowns. He also scored on a 75-yard kick return in the second half.

The Flashes scored on the first play of their first possession of the ball when quarterback Tristan Wilbanks threw a pass to Chase Tucker who stepped back and threw it to Cooper Madison for a touchdown. Padre Gray Jr and Wilbanks also had rushing touchdowns in the game.

On defense, Wes Warnock, Tucker and Adam Francisco each had 10 tackles for the Flashes. Warnock also caught the game-winning interception.

The Flashes are now 4-5 and are in a better position to clinch a playoff spot. They travel to Natchez to play Cathedral High next Friday in the final game of the regular season.

Former WC player Vertez Shorter got his second sack of the season Thursday

Former Warren Central football player Vertez Shorter picked up his second sack of the season Thursday for Hinds Community College in the game against Jones Community College.

Shorter, who is in his sophomore season, was able to get to the quarterback for a big stop in Hinds 18-16 win. His first sack came last week against Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

Shorter is gaining plenty of playing time this season at defensive tackle for the Eagles who now have a 1-1 record. He is a 2019 graduate of Warren Central High School and gained 72 tackles and four sacks in the 2019 season.

Shorter and the Eagles will be at home next week as they play Itawamba Community College at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22.
