The Vicksburg YMCA has decided to replace tackle football with flag football this upcoming season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In previous years, the YMCA had a tackle league for fifth and sixth graders.

YMCA Program Director Wayne Scott made the announcement Wednesday.

“We will be playing flag football in all age groups,” Scott wrote in a letter to parents posted on Facebook. “Unfortunately, we feel that tackle increases exposure of our youth to COVID-19. The Y wants our youth to still experience the game and be safe at the same time. We will be modifying our rules to comply with the guidelines as set by the CDC. Of course, as in all sports, there will be contact. We hope to minimize the contact by implementing these rules and playing the game.”

Registration for flag football opens Monday, July 13, and runs through Tuesday, Sept. 1. Register online at vicksburgymca.com or at the W.K. Purks Center, 267 YMCA Place.

The flag football season will be held for kindergarten through sixth grade.
