Head coach Julius Williams talks to the team after the end of the first quarter.

Vicksburg High School’s ninth grade boys basketball team played Thursday night at VHS. The Gators defeated the Pearl High School Pirates in a big game resulting in a 61-39 victory.

Jaleel Flemmings took over the first quarter for the Gators by scoring 10 points to help Vicksburg lead 11-2 at the end of the first. Vicksburg played tough defense during the first half, only allowing 19 points by halftime giving the Gators a 41-19 lead.

Jalen Banks scored 12 points to help the Gators with their victory.

Once the second half began, the Gators lead narrowed when the Pirates gained 12 straight points to bring the score to 41-31. During that time frame, Vicksburg had taken their starters out for so other players could get some action.

“I wanted to give a chance for all the players to play because we have a great team,” said head coach Julius Williams.

The Gators took a big lead again in the fourth quarter, which eventually led to Vicksburg’s big victory.

The ninth grade Vicksburg girls team also defeated the Pearl Pirates on Thursday in a 57-30 victory. Layla Carter led the Lady Gators with 21 points to help secure the victory. The Lady Gators played tough all game, barely giving the Lady Pirates a chance to put points on the board, as the Gators won by 27.
