In the final game of their football season, the Vicksburg Junior High School Gators had a big win Tuesday night as they defeated Germantown 56-14.
Quarterback Michael Johnson made three touchdowns in the victory. He threw two touchdowns to wide receiver Delvechio Ellis.
The Gators really stepped up on defense and many players forced turnovers and returned them for touchdowns.
Larry Winters, Clifton Walker and Maurice Taylor all had forced fumbles, and they returned them for touchdowns that were over 50 yards. Cedric Blackmore also forced a turnover when he caught an interception and returned it for a 30-yard touchdown.
Vicksburg native DeMichael Harris moves to Indianapolis Colts’ active roster
Vicksburg native DeMichael Harris moved to the active roster for the Indianapolis Colts this week when they play the Cincinnati Bengals.
Harris was placed on the Colts’ practice squad last month but has received a chance to be on the field with the team Sunday.
He joined the Colts this summer after going undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft. Before joining the Colts, he played for the University of Southern Mississippi and Hinds Community College.
Harris is a 2016 graduate of St. Aloysius High School, and he led the Flashes to a state championship game in 2014. Fans can see Harris this Sunday at noon on Fox.
Destiny Sims wins the Best of 2020 Prospect Award
Vicksburg High School basketball player Destiny Sims participated in the Geeker’s Girl Combine over the weekend where she was given the Best of 2022 Prospect Award.
Participants in the combine came from Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi, and Sims managed to become the star of the show.
The combine was based on drills, one-on-ones and five-on-fives. Sims worked hard at the event and left with an amazing award. Multiple scouts could see how talented she has become.
Sims is going into her third year starting for the Gators, and she finished last season averaging 12.4 points per game. She also led the Gators to the third round of the playoffs under head coach Troy Stewart.
Sims and the Gators will be gearing up for their season this month. They are scheduled to play Cleveland Central Nov. 17 in the first game of the season.
Alabama’s coach Nick Saban and Greg Byrne test positive for COVID-19
University of Alabama head football coach Nick Saban and UA Athletic Director Greg Byrne have tested positive for COVID-19.
“I found out earlier this afternoon that I had tested positive for COVID-19,” Saban said Wednesday in statement from the university. “I immediately left work and isolated at home. At this time, I do not have any symptoms relative to COVID, and I have taken another PCR test to confirm my diagnosis.”
Byrne also released a statement Wednesday.
“Today, I received notice that my COVID-19 test from this morning came back positive,” Byrne said. “Upon hearing the news, I immediately entered self-isolation and will remain at home and follow all guidelines. We’ve been diligent about mask wearing and social distancing from the start and want to continue to encourage you all to take the necessary precautions to help stop the spread of this virus for yourself and those around you.”
No. 2 Alabama is set to play No. 3 Georgia Saturday. Offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian will fill in as interim head coach during Saban’s absence.
