Vicksburg Holiday Open House Nov. 17

Holiday Open House in Downtown Vicksburg

Each year the residents and merchants of Vicksburg work together to make the holidays a community effort.

Nov. 17, from 1 to 5 p.m., that effort comes to Vicksburg’s city center with the Downtown Vicksburg Holiday Open House hosted by the Downtown Vicksburg Main Street Program.

“This is an open house for the merchants, and it’s meant to give people the first scents and sights of the holiday season,” said Kim Hopkins, director of the Downtown Vicksburg Main Street Program. “Hopefully the weather will really make it feel like it, too.”

Merchants will be offering special holiday sales, festive decorations and specials for all. Live music will also be playing along Washington Street.

The Downtown Main Street hopes to help the city bring in Christmas with this event as well as direct more traffic to the downtown area.

For more information regarding the Downtown Vicksburg Holiday Open House call 601-634-4527 or visit the Downtown Vicksburg website.

“It’s a good time to come down and shop local, have a good time downtown and start your Christmas season,” she said.

Alcorn State to host 2020 Women in Higher Education-Mississippi Network conference in Vicksburg

From Alcorn State University:

Talented higher education leaders from across the state of Mississippi will convene for an annual conference that focuses on shedding light on the roles and prominence of female educators.

Alcorn is the host institution for the 2020 Women in Higher Education-Mississippi Network annual conference Feb. 20 and 21 at the Vicksburg Convention Center in Vicksburg, Miss. The conference theme is “Women of Many Hats: Developing the Whole Woman.”

WHEMN’s mission is to identify, develop, advance and support women in higher education throughout the state of Mississippi. The organization’s membership is comprised of women who are employed at one of Mississippi’s two-year and four-year colleges and universities, and graduate students. WHEMN is a part of the American Council on Education–Women’s Network, which is a national system of networks within each state, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia with the goal of advancing and supporting women in higher education.

Dr. LaToya Hart, WHEMN state coordinator and director for Institutional Effectiveness and Assessment at Alcorn, said that the conference would provide tips on how to be more effective professionals.

“This year’s conference will allow women to examine their various roles and how to perform their roles more effectively and efficiently,” Hart said. “The conference will feature speakers and panel discussions on several topics for women and their many professional and personal roles.”

Hart said the conference is perfect for interacting with women that work in similar capacities at other institutions of higher learning in the state.

“This is a statewide conference that will provide opportunities for professional development. It also provides a great opportunity to network with women from other institutions that share similar responsibilities and interests.”

Registration for the WHEMN conference ends Friday, Jan. 31, or when the capacity is reached. Visit to register. For more information about the conference, contact Hart at 601-877-4187 or
