VHS soccer player Williams scored seven goals Monday

Vicksburg High School boys soccer player Chris Williams had a outstanding performance Monday as VHS defeated Raymond 8-1.

Williams scored seven goals in the big win for the Gators which helped put the game out of reach for Raymond. Williams is a senior at Vicksburg High and also plays on the Gator’s football where he was the starting kicker this past season.

Williams and VHS will play Cleveland Central in an away game Thursday starting at 5:30 p.m.




Giants and Bears named YMCA Flag Football co-champions



The Giants and the Bears are co-champions for the 2020 Vicksburg YMCA Flag Football season.

Both teams consist of 10 and 11-year-olds from Bovina Elementary and Bowmar Elementary schools in Vicksburg. They both also finished the season with 4-2 records.

The Giants and Bears played each other twice this season, and each team won once and lost once.

The Giants are coached by Wayne Lynch whose son, Paxton, played on the team this season. He also coached the team last season when they had a 7-0 record.

The Bears were coached by Deonta Selvy Sr. whose son, Deonta Jr., was the team’s starting quarterback. The team finishes successfully every season under Selvy Sr. This year they are proud to have earned the title of co-champions.

Dr. Martin Chaney was the assistant coach for the Bears while his grandson, Nicholas Lee, was a player on the team.

Both teams will be returning multiple players next season and Vicksburg Daily News will be there to report on every game.

VHS player Michael Montgomery receives first scholarship offer

Vicksburg High School football player Michael Montgomery recently received his first football scholarship offer.

Montgomery got an official offer to play football next season at Pearl River Community College. He posted the news Tuesday on Twitter, saying he was blessed to receive the offer.

Montgomery finished his final season at VHS last week. He had a very productive year playing on both the offensive and defensive line. In his years as a Gator, he is known for his strength and ability to protect the quarterback, and now he has a chance to show his skills on a higher level.

Montgomery has not committed to play at any college, yet, and between now and national signing day, he has a great chance of receiving more offers.

PCA boys basketball team crushes Mt. Salus 69-37

The Porter’s Chapel Academy boys basketball team defeated Mt. Salus 69-37 Monday night in a big win for the Eagles.

Mt. Salus’ defense was unable to stop Chris Taylor, who led the Eagles with 33 points on the night. He also had three assists and four steals by the end of the game.

Braden Kapp came in second on points, scoring 8, along with 3 three assists. He also played great defense and was able to snag three rebounds and two steals.

The Eagles were led by head coach Walter Hallberg IV who kept the team on task the whole night.

Willie Rogers and Tyler Washington scored 6 points each in the Eagles victory, but it was their defense that stood out the most. Rogers led the team in rebounds, racking up 13 throughout the game.

The Eagles will face North Sunflower Thursday and will strive for another great performance.
