Three Vicksburg natives will start for Hinds CC tonight

Three Vicksburg natives will start Thursday night for Hinds Community College as they face the defending national champions Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

Malik Sims, Chris Winston and Connor Smith will be back on the field for the first time since last season.

Sims was a star linebacker at Warren Central last year, and he was highly recruited by many junior colleges. He was also a Vicksburg Daily News all county player last season.

Winston also played for the Vikings last season on both offense and defense. He helped get WC to the playoffs in all three of his varsity years. He will start tonight at center for Hinds.

Smith graduated from St. Aloysius in 2019 where he was the kicker and punter for the Flashes. He is in his second season with the Eagles and will start tonight as the kicker.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. in Perkinston, Mississippi. The Vicksburg Daily News will provide updates on the local players’ success.

Lynn and Qualls shined in their YMCA football games Monday

Karson Lynn and Shawnderrick Qualls Jr. both had great nights Monday for their teams in the YMCA touch football league.

Lynn had great performance last night for the Giants in their 22-8 win over the Bears.

He finished the game with three touchdowns on the night. He caught two interceptions and returned them for touchdowns while on defense.

Lynn is a second grader at South Park Elementary School and has been leading the Giants to a winning season.

Qualls scored the Wildcats’ first touchdown of the night as they beat the Giants 20-0 Monday.

Qualls broke out in the beginning of the game with a 95-yard run that put his team on the scoreboard. Kaleb Sims and Harrison Hendrix also scored for the Wildcats who now have a 5-0 record.

Qualls is a first grader at Sherman Avenue Elementary and has been shining for the Wildcats all season.

St. Aloysius Flashes clinch a playoff spot

The St. Aloysius Flashes football team has clinched a playoff spot and will advance their season this week.

St. Al’s regular season came to an end last week in a 18-0 forfeit loss due to weather against Cathedral High School.

The Flashes finished the 2020 regular season with a 4-6 record under first-year head coach Stacy Sizemore. St. Al struggled in the first half of the season but began to turn things around last month when they defeated Silliman Institute 38-0.

The team will travel to Greenwood, Mississippi, Friday to play Pillow Academy, which has a 7-3 record.

Pillow Academy and St. Aloysius haven’t played each other in over a decade, and both teams will be fighting to keep their season going. The game begins at 7 p.m. Friday

Regan scored four touchdowns in VHS victory over Canton

Vicksburg High School football player Shakori Regan had one of his best games in his varsity career Thursday against Canton.

Regan finished the game with four rushing touchdowns to help the Gators win 36-20. He also had 106 rushing yards on the night helping the team (2-6) further their playoff hopes.

Regan switched from quarterback to running back this season and is now the team’s lead rusher. He had scoring runs in both the first and second half of the game to help the Gators maintain a steady lead over Canton.

Regan and the Gators will have a forfeit victory Friday over Callaway who opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns.
