St. Aloysius player Josh Larsen a key player on defense

St. Aloysius football player Joshua Larsen had a great night on defense Friday for the Flashes.

Larsen stepped into the game in the second half and came up with four big tackles and two tackles for loss. He also had two sacks on the night, his first sacks on the varsity level.

Larsen was a key player in the second half of the game, and he had plenty of help from fellow teammates Jax and Land Oglesby, and Greg Allen who all played on defensive line. Trace Daily and Wes Warnock also had more than 10 tackles on the night.

Larsen is expected to get lots of playing time when the Flashes face Silliman Academy tomorrow at 7 p.m.

Williams, Riggs, Jefferson lead their teams in touchdowns Friday

Three Warren County athletes led their teams in touchdowns on Friday night in district games.

Vicksburg High School freshman running back Alex Jefferson led the Gators in touchdowns in their last game against Ridgeland High School. He finished the night with 2 rushing touchdowns in the 49-32 loss.

St. Aloysius running back Brennan Williams led the Flashes in touchdowns in their big 43-28 win over Washington School. He had 3 touchdowns on Friday, including a 75-yard kick return in the opening of the second half.

Porter’s Chapel Academy quarterback Jace Riggs scored the most touchdowns for the Eagles on Friday in their 48-13 loss to Glenbrook. Riggs had a passing touchdown along with a 3-yard touchdown run.

Warren Central had an off week so there were no recorded stats for the Vikings last week.

Former VHS coach Tavares Johnson Sr. to coach in the Mississippi/Alabama All-Star game

Former Vicksburg High School football coach Tavares Johnson Sr. has been selected as a coach for the 2020 Mississippi/Alabama All-Star game.

Johnson will be coaching the wide receivers on the big game where top Mississippi athletes will play against Alabama high school players on December 12 in Montgomery, Alabama.

Johnson first became the head coach of VHS in 2012 after the retirement of Alonzo Stevens. He suffered a tough 1-10 season in his first year, but quickly turned things around in his second year, 2013, when he lead the Gators to a 6-6 season and a playoff appearance.

Johnson left VHS after two seasons and became the head coach of Simmons High School where he led the team to  two state championships.

Johnson is now the head coach of Northside High School, where he finished last season with a 14-1 record. He currently coaches alongside his son, Tavares Johnson Jr., who was the starting quarterback for VHS in 2013.

VJHS player Michael Johnson scored three touchdowns Thursday

Vicksburg Junior High School quarterback Michael Johnson scored three touchdowns in the final junior high football game of the season Thursday.

Johnson, a seventh grader, threw two of the touchdowns and rushed for the third in the 56-14 victory over Germantown. Both of Johnson’s touchdown passes were thrown to Delvechio Ellis.

This season was Johnson’s first year playing quarterback, and he helped the Gators finish with a successful 3-2 record under head coach Larry Carter Jr. He will have another season to play as quarterback as an eighth grader during the next school year.

Johnson also plays basketball and baseball in addition to football, and he has excelled in all three sports.
