St. Al Flashes defeat Washington School 43-28

The St. Aloysius Flashes traveled to Greenville Friday night to play Washington School, and they came up with a big 43-28 district win.

Running back Brennan Williams led the Flashes with 132 rushing yards on 13 carries and two rushing touchdowns. He also scored on a 75-yard kick return in the second half.

The Flashes scored on the first play of their first possession of the ball when quarterback Tristan Wilbanks threw a pass to Chase Tucker who stepped back and threw it to Cooper Madison for a touchdown. Padre Gray Jr and Wilbanks also had rushing touchdowns in the game.

On defense, Wes Warnock, Tucker and Adam Francisco each had 10 tackles for the Flashes. Warnock also caught the game-winning interception.

The Flashes are now 4-5 and are in a better position to clinch a playoff spot. They travel to Natchez to play Cathedral High next Friday in the final game of the regular season.

Former WC player Vertez Shorter got his second sack of the season Thursday

Former Warren Central football player Vertez Shorter picked up his second sack of the season Thursday for Hinds Community College in the game against Jones Community College.

Shorter, who is in his sophomore season, was able to get to the quarterback for a big stop in Hinds 18-16 win. His first sack came last week against Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

Shorter is gaining plenty of playing time this season at defensive tackle for the Eagles who now have a 1-1 record. He is a 2019 graduate of Warren Central High School and gained 72 tackles and four sacks in the 2019 season.

Shorter and the Eagles will be at home next week as they play Itawamba Community College at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22.

Former St. Al player Connor Smith kicked the game-winning field goal Thursday

Former St. Aloysius football player Connor Smith made four big field goals for Hinds Community College Thursday night, including the one that clinched the win.

Smith’s first score was a 25-yard field goal in the first half of the game to put the Eagles on the scoreboard. Later, he knocked down 20- and 24-yard field goals, even as the Eagles trailed the Jones County Bobcats 16-15 in the fourth quarter.

Smith’s final field goal of the night was the one that helped the Eagles bring home an 18-16 win. He kicked a 25 yarder as time expired, giving Hinds its first victory of the season.

Smith is a 2019 graduate of St. Aloysius and is playing in his final season for the Eagles.

32nd Annual Over the River Run Saturday

The Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation is excited to present the 32nd Annual Over the River Run.

The Foundation along with sponsors and volunteers present this special community event. The 5 mile running and walking race will take place Saturday, Oct. 17, at 8 a.m. and begins at the Old Mississippi River Bridge located at Interstate 20 and Washington Street.

Register online to run or walk on RaceRoster.com. Entry fees are $35 and $40. Family entries are available as well as virtual runners.

COVID-19 precautions will be put into place to protect participants, volunteers and spectators, including a limit of 400 entrants. SCHF hopes everyone appreciates these efforts and follows the guidelines to help protect the well-being of those who are gathering.
