Sports Force Park hosting ‘JUCO Games on the River’ this week

Sports Force Park in Vicksburg will host the first “JUCO Games on the River” this week.

This event is an opportunity for all junior college baseball teams in the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges (MACCC) to play their fall games at one location.

Games will be played Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

The Hinds Baseball program will be livestreaming all games as well as competing in the event. All games are sponsored by Hinds Community College and will be live-streamed at http://hindsccsports.net/channel-1/

Schedule for the week:

Monday, Oct. 5

Field 6 Home Away
Game 1 – 10 a.m. Holmes CC vs Mississippi Delta CC
Game 2 – 2 p.m. Mississippi Delta CC vs  Northeast CC
Game 3 – 6 p.m. Northeast CC vs  Holmes CC

 

Tuesday, Oct. 6

Field 6 Home Away
Game 1 – 10 a.m. Hinds CC vs Southwest CC
Game 2 – 2 p.m. Southwest CC vs MS Gulf Coast CC
Game 3 – 6 p.m. MS Gulf Coast CC vs Hinds CC

 

Wednesday, Oct. 7

Game 1 – 10 a.m. Pearl River CC vs East Central CC

Thompson and Riggs top quarterbacks in Vicksburg and Warren County

Warren Central quarterback Kentrick Thompson and Porter’s Chapel Academy quarterback Jace Riggs are the two top quarterbacks in Vicksburg and Warren County as of this week.

Thompson is leading statistically for the two public schools in the Vicksburg area. He has an overall of six touchdowns on the season, and the Vikings remain undefeated.

Riggs, who is in his first season as starting quarterback for the Eagles, is leading for the private schools in the area. He has made seven touchdowns, and PCA maintains a 4-4 record.

Both have stepped up for their teams this year, and each week they continue to improve.

Riggs and PCA will face Glenbrook this Friday at home starting at 7 p.m., and the Vikings have an off week.

Sims racked up eight tackles in his college debut

Vicksburg native and Hinds Community College football player Malik Sims made eight tackles in his college football debut Thursday night.

In the game against Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Sims came in second with tackles for the Eagles as they lost 31-24 against the defending national championship team.

Sims was a key player in the game, and he was seen all over the field stopping defenders. He is mostly known for his great tackling ability, which started when he was a Warren Central Viking playing under head coach Josh Morgan.

Sims and the Eagles will be at home this coming Thursday as they face the Jones County CC Bobcats.

Hall of Fame baseball player Joe Morgan dead at 77

Hall of Fame baseball player Joe Morgan died Sunday at the age of 77.

Morgan is best known for playing with the Cincinnati Reds where he helped the team win the World Series in 1975 and 1976. He played ball in the major leagues from 1963 to 1984, and he finished his career with the Oakland Athletics.

By the time he retired, he had a .271 batting average and had accumulated 2,517 hits, 1,133 RBIs and 689 stolen bases during his career.

After his retirement, Morgan became a sports broadcaster and worked with ESPN from 1990 to 2010. In 2010, he returned to the Reds and became an adviser to baseball operation.

Morgan’s death shocked the baseball world Monday morning. There has been no official announcement on the cause of his death although ESPN reported that he had struggled with various health issues in recent years, including a nerve condition, a form of polyneuropathy.
