Sondra Denniss Cook, 1962 – 2019

Sondra Denniss Cook passed away Thursday, Dec. 26, 2019. She was 57 years old.

Sondra was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Penny Stubbs.

She is survived by her husband Ralph Cook; daughter Tara Cook; son Corey Cook; sisters Mary Ann Gatewood and Dorothy Nutt; and a brother Argle Penington.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020, at Utica Baptist Church with visitation starting at 1:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Utica Baptist Church, 220 Main St. Utica, MS 39175.

Bryan Lancaster Flournoy, 1946 – 2020

Bryan Flournoy

Bryan Lancaster Flournoy passed Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2020, at the Mississippi Veterans Home in Jackson, Miss. He was 74 years old.

Mr. Flournoy was born in Vicksburg and lived there with his grandparents, B.L. “Buck” and Effie Fielder, from 5-years-old until he graduated from H. V. Cooper High School in 1964.

Bryan attended Brigham Young University from 1968 to 1970 where he studied engineering technology after graduating at Hinds Junior College in Raymond. He served in the U.S. Navy from May 1967 through March 1988 in Naval Intelligence. He retired at the rank of E-6.

While working at ERDC-WES Bryan worked many natural disasters for FEMA such as Northridge, Calif., earthquake, a hurricane in Puerto Rico, and hurricanes Andrew, Ike and Katrina.

He retired in 2011.

Bryan was an avid student of genealogy for his roots, Fielder/Flournoy, and was a member of the Huguenot Society.

Bryan is survived by his wife of 33 years, Amy Douglas Flournoy. He was preceded in death by his aforementioned grandparent; his parents, Bryan and Marjorie Flournoy; sister, Marjorie Mae Blackwell; and brother, George Marshall Flournoy.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 1, from 2 until 4 p.m. at Riles Funeral Home, 5000 Indiana Ave. in Vicksburg. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 2 at Cedar Hill Cemetery, 326 Lover’s Lane, Vicksburg.

The family greatly appreciates the compassionate care Bryan received at the Mississippi Veterans Affairs Nursing Home in Jackson for the last three years, several brief and recent stays at Baptist Hospital and all other medical facilities and caregivers including Kindred Hospices.

Bryan talked about his love for Israel and Hadassah, an international healthcare and Zionist organization. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Hadassah (mail to 5215 Old Canton Road, Jackson, MS 39211-4625) or a charity of your choice in Bryan’s memory.

Cheryl Floyd Swan, 1954 – 2020

Cheryl Floyd Swan passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Wednesday morning, Feb. 19, 2020, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 10, 1954, in Vicksburg, Miss., a daughter of the late William Franklin Floyd and Flora Mae Floyd.

Cheryl was also preceded in death by her brother, Donald Franklin Floyd.

Cheryl was a loving mother, grandmother and loyal friend. She was known for her infectious smile and ability to make others laugh. She enjoyed arts, crafts, and spending time with her friends and family.

Cheryl taught school for over 35 years. She was a dedicated teacher with a true passion for helping children develop an appreciation for learning by making school fun.

Cheryl is survived by two daughters, Healy Swan Noblin and husband Jeff, and Mary Swan Monteleone and husband Josh, and one son, Daniel Joseph Swan IV; two grandchildren, Josephine Mae Monteleone, 8, and Lena Swan Monteleone, 6; and one brother Ronald William Floyd.  She also leaves many friends who will sadly miss her.

A visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. with services to follow on March 7, 2020, at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home, 1830 Cherry St., Vicksburg, Miss.

Carl Eugene Drake, 1942 – 2020

Carl Eugene Drake passed away in Metairie, La., Feb. 24, 2020.

Gene was born in Vicksburg on Feb. 13, 1942, and was the son of Clara Frances and Chester E. Drake, both deceased. His sister, Clara Frances Drake, predeceased him.

Gene graduated from H.V. Cooper High School in Vicksburg in 1960. He completed his undergraduate studies and a law degree (Juris Doctor) at the University of Mississippi and was a member of the Mississippi Bar. He was a member and vice president of the Kappa Sigma social fraternity. In college, he graduated from the Officer Candidate’s school with the Mississippi Army National Guard and served for a decade.

Gene and his father co-owned Drake Towing Company in Vicksburg. Gene founded and operated Tideland Corporation, a water transportation company in New Orleans, for over 40 years. He attended First Baptist Church in Vicksburg and transferred his letters and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in New Orleans for the remainder of his life. He was a pilot, a fisherman, and an avid sailor and was a member of the Southern Yacht Club for decades.

Gene was survived by cousins Stephanie Barrett Branch of Omaha, Neb., Kathe Ellis Baer of Chapel Hill, N.C., Elizabeth Barrett Locatur of Charlotte, N.C. and Martha Anne Ellis Zelski of Keene Valley, N.Y.

A graveside service will be held at Cedar Hill Cemetery on Friday, Feb. 28, 2020, at 10 a.m. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date at Trinity Episcopal Church in New Orleans.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be sent to St. Jude’s Children Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
