Mississippi voters approved a ballot initiative that makes medical marijuana legal in the state, but there is plenty to do before the first dispensary opens its doors in the Magnolia State.

In a pair of tweets Thursday, the Mississippi State Department of Health said that regulations, including production and licensing, must be complete by July 1. MSDH’s plan to implement the entire program, which was set out in the initiative’s proposal, will be ready to go by Aug. 15, 2021.

The agency is tasked with all aspects of the medical marijuana program in Mississippi as part of ballot initiative 65. The new law gives physicians the power to prescribe marijuana for numerous medical conditions. Read the entire proposal here.

“As we make progress we will keep the public fully informed,” MSDH said in a tweet, “and ask for your patience as we develop the necessary plans to go forward late next summer.”
