LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Dennis Rodman, who won five NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons, was among 12 finalists announced on Friday for induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame. The flamboyant Rodman, twice named the NBA’s defensive player of the year, won three titles with Chicago and two with Detroit during a 14-season career noted for his rebounding and defensive prowess. Ex-NBA players Jamaal Wilkes, Maurice Cheeks, Chris Mullin and Ralph Sampson were also finalists for induction. The other finalists are former NBA coaches Al Attles, Dick Motta and Tex Winter, college coaches Tara VanDerveer and Herb Magee, five-time women’s Olympian Teresa Edwards and college referee Hank Nichols. Finalists need 18 votes from a 24-member committee for election into the Springfield, Massachusetts, hall, officials said in a statement. The class will be enshrined on August 12. Inductees will be announced April 4 in Houston prior to the NCAA’s collegiate basketball championship game.
