Steady progress is being made to open a drive-thru COVID-19 vaccination site in Vicksburg.

Friday, a large tent was put up at the rear of Uptown Vicksburg (formerly known as the Vicksburg Mall or Pemberton Mall) at 3505 Pemberton Blvd.

The tent will be used to administer COVID-19 vaccinations to residents from the Vicksburg and Warren County area, and to those in surrounding communities. The tent can accommodate two lanes of traffic for drive-thru convenience.

Warren County Emergency Management Director John Elfer said Saturday morning that he hopes to have everything in place so that people can begin the registration process early next week. Similar to other drive-thru vaccination sites in Mississippi, those wanting a shot will have to make an appointment through the University of Mississippi website or call 877-978-6453.

Elfer said an official announcement would be made next week, possibly as early as Monday. He added that local officials are working through the process to obtain doses of vaccine and to finalize the logistics to administer shots as soon as possible.

Those currently eligible to receive a vaccine include anyone age 65 and older, those 16 to 64 with chronic health conditions making them more vulnerable to the virus, health care workers and first responders such as EMTs and paramedics.
