PCA girls basketball team defeats Franklin Academy 51-42

The Porter’s Chapel Academy girls basketball team won its home opener against Franklin Academy Thursday night in a big 51-42 victory.

The Lady Eagles controlled the ball most of the night and had a good 36-18 lead by halftime.

Yakia Burns led the Eagles in points with 32 and 11 rebounds on the night. Teammate Zy Smith pitched in with 14 points to help the Eagles secure the victory that brought their record to 2-1.

“I felt like I performed good tonight by penetrating the gaps and communicating on defense to help the team,” Burns said.

PCA will face Franklin Academy again Tuesday but they will travel this time in hopes of bringing home another win for the Eagles.

PCA basketball player Zyer Smith made 17 points Tuesday

Porter’s Chapel Academy basketball player Zyer Smith had a great game Tuesday as she helped the Eagles to a 60-39 win over Sharkey Issaquena Academy.

Smith had 17 points in the victory along with three steals. She came in second with the most points behind teammate Yakia Burns.

Smith is a Port Gibson High School transfer and is becoming a big key player for the Lady Eagles under head coach Casey Fisher. She is in her sophomore year and is continuing to improve every day at practice while preparing for her next match.

Smith and the Eagles will be at home Thursday at 6 p.m. to take on Franklin Academy.

Seventh grader Jackson scored his first goal on the Vicksburg High varsity team

Seventh-grade soccer player Cannon Jackson scored his first goal Monday as a varsity player on the Vicksburg High School team.

Jackson was a key player in VHS’ 3-0 victory over Greenville High School Monday, giving the Gators a 1-1 record.

Jackson was moved up to the varsity team due to his great athletic ability and how well he performs against older players. He plays under head coach Ernest Dixon who is holding Jackson to high standards.

Zachary Stokes and Chris Williams scored the other two goals Monday for the Gators in their big win.

Porter’s Chapel girls basketball team defeats Sharkey Issaquena 60-39

The Porter’s Chapel Academy girls basketball team defeated Sharkey Issaquena Academy Tuesday night for a big 60-39 win.

Senior Yakia Burns led the Lady Eagles with 32 points, nine rebounds, five assists and six steals. She has now scored more than 30 points for the Eagles in back-to-back games.

Zyer Smith also had a big night for the Eagles as she put up 17 points and three steals on the night to help the team to a 1-1 record.

In the second quarter of the game, Olivia Masterson hit a big 3-pointer which forced SIA to call a timeout. She finished the game with an impressive seven points and seven rebounds.

Macey and Marley Bufkin also chipped in for the big victory against SIA. Macey finished with three points, three steals and three rebounds, while her sister Marley had five points.

The Lady Eagles will be back home Thursday to play Franklin Academy at 4 p.m.
