The Mississippi High School Activities Association executive committee met Thursday to decide whether to resume sports June 1 or to keep athletics suspended longer due to COVID-19.

After studying the situation, the committee approved the following for summer athletics and activities, effective June 1 and for summer 2020 only:

  • School athletics and fine arts activity programs can begin summer practices, workouts, skill development, weightlifting, conditioning and rehearsals for student-athletes and fine arts participants on June 1, pending Gov. Tate Reeves’ upcoming announcement on a date to reopen all Mississippi school facilities. Athletic coaches and activity directors must confirm with their school and/or district administrators that a specific school facility is open and available for use.
  • Competition in athletics and activities between or among MHSAA member or non-member schools and/or teams is canceled until school resumes in the fall.
  • All practices, workouts, skill development, weightlifting, conditioning and rehearsals shall be considered voluntary for student athletes and activities participants.
  • School team and school activities participation and travel to summer programs and/or team camps are not allowed. On-campus summer programs and/or school camps should adhere to national, state and local COVID-19 health recommendations.

Porter’s Chapel Academy Junior High football player Jase Jung has been selected as the first Vicksburg Daily News junior high Defensive Player of the Year.

Jung is an eighth grader at PCA and helped his team to an undefeated 7-0 season this year with a defense that only allowed their opponents 13.4 points per game, on average. He played under head coach Blake Purvis this year, and he outshined all of his opponents.

“Jase was a dominant force in the back end of our defense,” Purvis said. “He always seemed to be in the right place at the right time and had several game-changing interceptions that helped us either comeback and win or seal a victory for us.“

Jung finished the season with five interceptions and returned two of them for touchdowns. He is the first player to win the VDN junior high Defensive Player of the Year award.

The Madison County School District has ordered the Ridgeland High School football team to quarantine due to three positive COVID-19 tests.

The Titans will quarantine at home for 14 days, which means they will not play Friday. The team was scheduled to play Holmes County Central Friday for their last game of the regular season, but the game has been canceled giving the Holmes Jaguars a big district forfeit win.

The team ends the season with a 6-2 record, only losing one district game due to Friday’s forfeit to the Jaguars. They will likely head into the playoffs after the quarantine.

The Titans boy’s basketball team has also been ordered to suspend practice and quarantine and will not be able continue practice until the end of the two week period.
