MHSAA says June 1 will be the restart date for high school sports

Published

on

The Mississippi High School Activities Association has reaffirmed its June 1 restart date for high-school sports in Mississippi.

April 15, the committee voted to cancel the remainder of spring sports competitions and prohibit workouts and competition until at least June 1 due to concerns over the COVID-19 crisis and school closures. The cancellation affected all high school sports including baseball, track and field, and cross country.

The MHSAA executive committee held a conference call Monday to decide whether it should extend the suspension or stick to its June 1 date. As of now, the committee decided to stay with the original date, but it will reconvene May 21 to re-evaluate the situation.

If the committee decides to push the date back, it could effect football and summer leagues.

Vicksburg High School football coach Todd McDaniel and St. Aloysius football coach Stacey Sizemore both finished with successful seasons in their first year at their schools.

McDaniel arrived at VHS earlier this year to help lead the Gator who hadn’t reached the playoffs since 2017.

The Gators had a rocky start in McDaniels first few games but the head coach quickly began turning things around as the offense got more and more comfortable with the wing-t running style.

The Gators were able to finish with a 4-8 season and ended up reaching the class 5A playoffs this season. McDaniel and the Gators will now begin weight room workouts to prepare for spring training.

Sizemore got the head coaching job of the Flashes back in February and inherited a very young team that he was in charge of turning around.

The Flashes struggled in the beginning of the season and were unable to score a touchdown early in the year. Soon, St. Aloysius shocked Silliman Institute in a 38-0 shutout to give them their first win under Sizemore.

The Flashes went on the finish the season with a 4-7 record under Sizemore and they are now currently in off season training.

Both Sizemore and McDaniel have a long history and reputation of building successful programs at the schools which they have coached, and many fans will be supporting them as they are preparing for their second season.
