Former MSU standout Jamar Chaney hired for the Bulldogs coaching staff

Former Mississippi State University standout football player Jamar Chaney has been hired as a senior defensive analyst for the Bulldogs.

MSU head coach Mike Leach announced the hiring earlier this week.

“We are thrilled to welcome Jamar back home to Starkville and the program.” Leach said in a statement. “Jamar had an outstanding career here as a student-athlete and brings experience, knowledge, and familiarity with Mississippi State. He has a valuable reputation around the game and our state. This has been a goal of ours since we arrived in Starkville, and our players and staff can’t wait to get to work with him.”

Chaney played for the Bulldogs from 2005 to 2009 where where he had a total of 286 tackles. He also played in the NFL from 2010 to 2014 before being placed on injury reserved list in 2014.

He spent last season at the University of Florida as the assistant director of player personnel under UF head coach Dan Mullen.

“Mississippi State means so much to me and my family, and I appreciate Coach Leach for the opportunity to return home to a place that I have so many great memories,” Chaney said in a statement after he was hired at MSU. “I am excited to be a part of an outstanding football staff and athletic department, and I can’t wait to get to work.”

Chaney will be working under first-year MSU head coach Mike Leach.

VJHS boys basketball team defeated WCJHS Thursday night 41-31

The Vicksburg Junior High boys basketball team won their season opener Thursday night against cross-town rival Warren Central Junior High.

The Gators had a hard time scoring in the first quarter but things picked up for both teams in the second half. By halftime, the score was 16-14, with VJHS in the lead.

Decorey Knight Jr. led the Gators with 13 points in the big 41-31 victory. Larry Reynolds and Mincer Minor had 6 points each for the Gators as well.

The Gators have a good start to their season under head coach Jerdon Hardiman who led them to the Little Six Championship last year with an 18-1 record.

Yakia Burns scored 32 points for PCA Thursday night

Porter’s Chapel Academy basketball player Yakia Burns scored 32 points for the Eagles in their loss Thursday night to North Sunflower Academy.

Burns is a senior transfer from Vicksburg High School where she helped the Gators reach the semifinals last year. To go along with her 32 points, Burns also had 11 rebounds, seven steals, and three assists.

With her successful high school stats, Burns has scholarship offers from Co-Lin Co and Mississippi Delta community colleges, the University of Southern Mississippi, Austin Peay State University and many more schools that have expressed interest. She is being coached by PCA head coach Casey Fisher and assistant coaches DeAndre King and Chandler Ellis.

Burns was also on the Vicksburg Daily News All-County list last season. She continues to improve her playing skills each season and is now leading the Eagles.

PCA will go on the road next Tuesday to play Sharkey-Issaquena where Burns is expected to have another great game.

WCJHS’ Shamaria Hodge scored 14 points helping Vikings defeat Gators

Warren Central Junior High basketball player Shamaria Hodge scored 14 points to lead the Vikings in their win against the Vicksburg Junior High Gators.

Hodge’s scoring began in the second half of the game, once the Vikings started to blow out the Gators. She was all over the court and punished the Gator defense every time she got the ball in her hands.

Hodge was the lead scorer in the game and managed to out score the entire VJHS team in the 30-7 win Thursday night.

It was the first game of the season for both teams, and it showed promise for the Vikings if Hodge can continus to give performances like she did Thursday.
