On Sunday afternoon, a domestic situation in Hinds County turned into a homicide.
Hinds County Deputies responded to the 3800 block of Middle Road outside of the corporate limits of Edwards at around 4:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The Sheriffs Department has identified the deceased as Marcus Butler, 32.
Deputies were responding to a domestic disturbance call when a secondary call came in indicating a shooting had occurred. Initially, the call indicated that Butler had assaulted his wife. A family friend arrived and attempted to intervene according to Hinds County Sheriff’s Spokesman Captain Tyree Jones. A fight ensued between the 27-year-old friend and Butler. Butler was subsequently shot several times in his upper torso.
There were two small children present at the time of the incident.
“It is a sad situation for all parties involved,” said Jones. “You have the deceased victim, you have the wife of the deceased victim that has been physically assaulted as well, and then you have the alleged shooter. So it’s a no-win situation for all parties that are involved. We are going to investigate the matter — we’re going to make a determination maybe by tonight if we will decide to file charges or not.”
The wife was transported for medical treatment following the incident. “She was injured. She was pretty bloody when deputies arrived,” Jones said. “There was an altercation between Marcus Butler and the shooter, as well. The shooter was armed with a pistol and fired multiple shots. We did recover a pistol on the scene (that) we believed to be in possession of Marcus Butler.”
Approximately an hour prior to this incident, Jackson Police had answered a call for a disturbance involving the couple at a Jackson area convenience store.
The case remains under investigation and will be reviewed by a Hinds County Grand Jury.
