Destiny Sims: VDN high school female player of the week

Destiny Sims put up a career-high 30 points in a 54-46 win over Callaway on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Sims is a sophomore on the Vicksburg High Gators women’s basketball team, and she is quickly becoming the team’s rising star as she has led the Gators to an 11-7 record.

Sims scored more than half of the Gators points win when they defeated Callaway, and she is only at the beginning stage of her stardom as she will have two more seasons after this one.

The Gators face Callaway again on Friday, Jan. 17, in Jackson.

John Hossley: VDN fourth grade Player of the Week

John Hossley led the Fast Breakers to a big victory over the Heat on Monday where he gained the most points in the game.

Hossley scored 24 points as the Fast Breakers went on to win 34-18. Hosley led the entire third and fourth grade YMCA league in points this past week.

This year is Hossley’s second season playing in this league. He has quickly become the star player of his team. Hossley communicated well with teammate Jamari Johnson on the court, which led to Johnson scoring 5 points on the night.

Hossley is a fourth-grader at Bowmar Elementary and is well-known for his athletic ability. In the fall of 2019, Hossley was the star football player for the Bears flag football team, which went 5-2 for the season.

Presley Carr: VDN female fourth-grade Player of the Week

Presley Carr led her team to a big victory Monday night as the Lady Shockers took down the Blue Crush.

Carr scored 14 points against the Blue Crush as she led her team to a 27-8 victory. She was also able to help some of her teammates to score including Aliyah Mims and Zoey Vines who both put up points.

The undefeated Lady Shockers have a 4-0 record this season and are the only undefeated team in the league. Carr is the team’s lead scorer and has a great attitude on the field, which helps her team stay focused and defeat their opponents.

Carr is a fourth-grader at Bowmar Elementary, where she is known as a good student and a young lady who loves basketball.

Her dad, Brandon Carr, coaches the Lady Shockers.

Michael Tod Andrews: VDN male high school player of the week

Michael Tod Andrews scored an impressive 43 points Monday in a big Porter’s Chapel victory against Rebul Academy.

Andrews outscored the entire Rebul Academy team as the Eagles went on to win 82-25. Andrews also had 11 steals, five assists and five rebounds as he led his team to victory.

In the fall of 2019, Andrews was a star football player for the Eagles as he collected 83 tackles, three interceptions, and one forced fumble.  Andrews made the Vicksburg Daily News all-county defensive team.
