Dee’s Babycakes opening retail location this weekend

Published

on

At only 10 years old, Vicksburg’s De’jonae Curtis is already a business veteran.

Her business, Dee’s Babycakes, has been providing sweet treats to private customers even as she competed in contests such as last year’s Sweetest Chefs of the South in Ridgeland.

This Valentine’s weekend Curtis is taking her success up a notch by opening a retail location at the Vicksburg Mall (3505 Pemberton Square Blvd.). In addition to her creative takes on cupcakes, Babycakes is also offering milk chocolate and white chocolate covered strawberries.

But Curtis’ goals aren’t all about profits and joining the Chamber of Commerce.

‘I started selling my Babycakes in hopes to give back to nonprofits like animal shelters and cancer organizations and do something I loved,” Curtis says on her GoFundMe page.

“I want to continue to give to people in need and learn more from my gift,” she added.

The name, Babycakes, is in honor of her cousin, Claudia, who died of cancer.

Dee’s Babycakes is celebrating its soft opening from Feb. 13 to Feb. 15. Friday she will be open from 4 to 8 p.m. or until everything is sold out. Saturday hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

For more information, visit Dee’s Babycakes Facebook page, and look for a website soon.

Secretary of state warns of misleading business mailer

Published

on

The Mississippi secretary of state’s office urges the business community, especially LLCs, to be cautious of a misleading mailer sent by a private entity called C.F.S.

In the mailer, the company offers to prepare 2021 annual reports for a $75 fee. The mailer may appear to be official government correspondence, but the fine print makes it clear it is not. All business owners should be aware this correspondence is not authorized by the Mississippi secretary of state’s office.

A sample of the mailer is shown below.

Businesses may report deceptive or misleading solicitations to our office or the Mississippi attorney general’s office. The attorney general’s Consumer Protection Hotline is 1-800-281-4418.

Speculation has been running rampant on social media as to what is being built on Iowa Boulevard across from C-Spire.

The Vicksburg Daily News has confirmed that KeyWay Coin Laundry is adding a second Vicksburg location on that site.

KeyWay is owned by Vicksburg native Key Ramsey along with his two sons Chaz and Chandler. They have been in business 12 years since opening their first location in Brookhaven, Mississippi. They now have 20 locations throughout the state from Vicksburg to Meridian and down to the Gulf Coast.

The company purchased the former Wendy’s building at 2500 Clay St. several years ago and recently made some improvements in that location by painting and adding new dryers.

The Clay Street location has been recently updated (photo courtesy of KeyWay Coin Laundry).

Key Ramsey is a 1978 graduate of St. Aloysius and a 1982 graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi.

Ramsey said he is hopeful that the Iowa Boulevard location will be open in early spring as construction is expected to take around 120 days. This new location will be similar in design to the company’s Yazoo City location.

Bar at LD’s Kitchen officially allowed to reopen

Published

on

As of Friday, Oct. 30, LD’s Kitchen has been allowed to reopen its bar and lounge.

The bar and lounge portion of LD’s Kitchen, located at 1111 Mulberry St., was ordered closed by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen in October following a late-night shooting Oct. 6 that left three people injured. Wade Carter, 31, subsequently died of his injuries Oct. 9.

Mayor George Flaggs Jr. announced he would be asking the board to allow the reopening last week, and made it official at the Board of Mayor and Alderman meeting Monday morning.

“LD’s was allowed to open as of Friday night when Chief Moore walked through the facility and told me that everything was in compliance,” Flaggs said.

South Ward Alderman Alex Monsour voted against the ruling, but North Ward Alderman Michael Mayfield and Flaggs both supported it. The ruling stands with a 2-1 vote.

The bar at LD’s is under new management since the shooting, but is still owned by Larry Prentiss. The closing did not affect the restaurant or catering sides of the business.

The terms of the agreement are as follows:

  • That LD’s Kitchen LLC/Larry Prentiss has transferred management of its bar and lounge to another person who will manage the lounge for and on behalf of Larry Prentiss.
  • Hours for the lounge will not begin before 6 p.m. daily.
  • Security will require all patrons entering the said facility to be screened by security guards using hand-held metal detectors.
  • That patrons leaving the facility and returning will again have to be screened by security
  • That all patrons will be required to ingress and egress through the front door of said facility.
  • Security guards will check patrons’ identification before allowing entrance and not allow anyone under the age of 21 into the lounge.
  • That the side door of said facility shall not be used as an entrance.
  • Security guards will monitor parking area that belongs to business.
  • Will maintain cameras inside and outside the facility to record activities on premises and said recordings will be available to the Vicksburg Police Department
  • Upgrade security by hiring security company which has been in business of at least two (2) years with trained guards.
  • Train staff on new safety procedures.
  • Before reopening, all exit doors shall contain push bar emergency exits with sirens on doors.
