The Cleveland Cavaliers announced Sunday that they have signed former Callaway High School basketball star Malik Newman to a 10-day contract.
Newman graduated from Callaway, in Jackson, in 2015, and in his junior year, he helped his team defeat Vicksburg High in the State Championships. He committed to Mississippi State University out of high school to play on the college level.
After one season at MSU, Newman transferred to Kansas University where he would become the team’s star point guard. Newman declared for the 2018 NBA draft after one season at Kansas.
The Los Angeles Lakers signed Newman to a two-way contract but released him a year later. Newman eventually found a place with the Canton Charge in Ohio, a team that competes in the NBA G League. He put up 20 points in his last five games.
Newman is averaging 17.4 points a game this season.
