2019 was a record-breaking year for tornadoes in Mississippi
The National Weather Service in Jackson says that 2019 was a record-breaking year for tornadoes in Mississippi.
In a tweet Tuesday evening, NWS said the Magnolia state experienced 114 tornadoes last year, which breaks the previous record of 109 set in 2008.
Think 2019 was active across Mississippi? It was! 114 tornadoes occurred in MS in 2019, which breaks a state record that was previously set in 2008 with 109 tornadoes. Records go back to 1950.

Three people died as a result of 2019’s tornadoes, and more than 40 were injured. The total economic impact has yet to be calculated.
More than half of the year’s total tornadoes occurred in one month. In April 2019, Mississippi saw 67 twisters, a tie with the previous April record set in 2011.
The single most active day for tornadoes in 2019 was April 18, when 43 tornadoes ripped through the state, mostly in Central Mississippi. Three tornadoes touched down in Vicksburg. That day marked the second largest tornado event in the state since Hurricane Rita roared through in 2005. Rita brought 44 tornadoes with her in one day, Sept 24, 2005.
December 2019 also broke the record for the most tornadoes ever seen in December, with 23. December 2008 and 1988 tied for the previous record with 16 each.
